Signs Your AC Isn’t Cooling Your Home Enough

Your air conditioner has one job: to keep your home cool. And if your air conditioner is not achieving that goal, something is wrong. Maybe you’re still relatively comfortable and don’t want to face the need for an expensive repair. But letting the problem go on will only mean that things will get worse.

If your air conditioner isn’t cooling your home, it’s time for air conditioning repair in Jackson, MS. You can keep reading to learn more about the signs that your air conditioner is not keeping up with your cooling needs. Then, schedule an appointment with our team to get it fixed and truly enjoy the comfort of your home.

Long Cooling Cycles

If it feels like your air conditioner is running constantly in an effort to cool your home, that is a bad sign. Your air conditioner should turn on and off at regular intervals to cool your home. If it’s staying on too long, that means it’s struggling to reach your desired temperature. Usually, cooling cycles last for around 15 to 20 minutes and then turn off for the same amount of time before turning back on again.

In some cases, this may mean that you have your thermostat settings too low and your air conditioner can’t keep up. But, if you have your thermostat at a reasonable setting, there may be a problem with your air conditioner. For example, there may be low refrigerant levels and the air conditioner is not blowing out air that is cold enough to lower the temperature.

Higher Utility Bills

And if you have long cooling cycles, that may reflect on your energy bill by way of higher payments. If you’ve noticed a jump in energy use, there is a good chance that your air conditioner is to blame. After all, it is one of the largest appliances in your home when it comes to energy consumption.

While it is true that your air conditioner can lose some of its efficiency over time, you should not notice a significant spike or a persistent upward trend in energy costs.

Keep in mind that you may not see a single jump in energy use, although that is common. Instead, you may see a slow trend of your energy use consistently increasing. This pattern can be difficult to pinpoint since it can happen so gradually, but it is equally important to pay attention to.

Lukewarm Air

When you hold your hand up to an air vent anywhere in your home, the air should feel specifically cold. If it doesn’t, that means that your air conditioner is not working as it should. Even if your home is still comfortable, the air blowing out of the vents should not be lukewarm. If you want, you can use an indoor thermometer to check the temperature of air coming out of your vents. If the temperature is not significantly lower than your current indoor air temperature, that is a big red flag.
