Why Isn’t My Heat Pump Heating?!

guy-mad-at-acHeat pumps are great for keeping your home cool and comfortable during the summer, but of course, in the winter, you expect that it is going to keep you and your family warm and toasty! So, what happens when your heat pump isn’t providing you with the heat you need?

There are a number of reasons why your heat pump might not be providing you with adequate warmth, and below, we have outlined some of these reasons for you. All you have to do is keep reading to find out more (oh, and of course, remember to call our team when you need a Hattiesburg, MS HVAC contractor.)

So, What’s The Deal?

Like we mentioned above, there are a number of reasons why your heat pump might not be working properly, including:

A Clogged Air Filter

One of the first things that your HVAC technician will check for is a clogged air filter. When the filter becomes too clogged with dirt and debris, it restricts the amount of air that enters the heat pump to be heated. Air filters need to be replaced more than once a year. In fact, it is recommended that air filters are changed every 1-3 months.

Thermostat Issue

Sometimes the issue doesn’t actually lie within the heat pump itself. A faulty thermostat can be the reason why you’re not receiving the heat you want. If the thermostat is miscalibrated, the heat pump won’t run long enough to maintain the level of heat your home needs. Also, if the connection between the thermostat and the pump is broken, it is impossible to change the system over to heating mode. Only a trained technician will be able to determine if a broken thermostat is the cause of your troubles.

Leaking Refrigerant

Heat pumps need a specific amount of refrigerant to function properly, even if it is in heating mode! During the winter, the refrigerant absorbs the heat in the surrounding air so it can heat your home. If there is a leak, then you’ll probably notice lukewarm air.

Broken Reversing Valve

The reversing valve is the mechanism that allows your heat pump to switch from cooling mode to heating mode and vice versa. If the valve becomes stuck, your system won’t be able to switch modes. An HVAC technician has the training and equipment to correctly replace the valve.

Call in a Professional!

If your heat pump isn’t working properly, don’t hesitate to call in a certified HVAC professional for repairs! Trust us, only a professional technician has the tools, training, and expertise to safely and correctly handle the complex needs of your system the first time around.

And yes, while there may be plenty of amateurs willing to provide these services for a fairly cheap price, remember that an attempt to save money could end up costing you much more in the long run. See, when it comes to your comfort and your budget, you don’t want to take any risks!
