5 Signs Your AC Needs Repairs

Summer is just around the corner. Is your air conditioner ready for the heat?

Air conditioning problems tend to strike at the worst time – when you need your cooling system the most. You’ll want your unit to be in the best possible working order before the worst of the summer heat hits. And just because it runs doesn’t mean it’s running efficiently. Some AC problems aren’t as noticeable as a system that won’t turn on. However even small proble,s can escalate into more significant issues.

When you turn on your AC for the summer, look for these five common signs your air conditioner needs repairs.

1. Short cycling

Even on the hottest days, your air conditioner should run on relatively uniform cooling cycles. If you notice it cycling on and off more than usual, or more rapidly, it may have a clogged air filter, a leaky ventilation system, or even a miscalibrated thermostat. It may also be the wrong sized unit for your home. Short cycling can cause other problems, so it’s essential to take care of it right away.

2. Poor cooling

If your air conditioner isn’t keeping up with your cooling needs, you might have issues with your home’s ductwork, the air conditioner’s blower fan, a clogged air filter, or another problem. Whatever the cause, when you aren’t getting enough cool air it’s clear that your air conditioning isn’t working efficiently.

3. Increased energy bills

If your energy bills increase more than expected when you use your air conditioner, it’s a sign that it’s no longer as efficient as it should be. There may be a problem with the ductwork or thermostat. If it’s an older unit, it may be nearing the end of its servicable lifespan.

4. Concerning noises

The only sound you want to hear from your air conditioner is the gentle whoosh of cool air moving through your vents. Other sounds, like rattling, hissing, screeching, or banging, usually indicate something isn’t right. Unwelcome sounds could originate in the outdoor unit from a fan or electrical problem, the indoor unit from a fan belt or the condensate drain, or even the ductwork.

5. Frozen evaporator coils

Ice or condensation on the internal components of your system is a sign that something is hindering the heat transfer process, causing the refrigerant in the system to over-cool things. You might also notice water under the unit or an overflowing drain pan. Frozen coils can have several causes, including refrigerant leaks, weak airflow, or dirty coils.
